Introduction to Silk Scarf Hand Painting with Yuh Okano
Common Ground on the Hill
A regional folklife center ofmaryland state arts council's maryland traditions program,
in residence at Mcdaniel College in Westminster, MD.
In this workshop, you will learn to degum the surface of a silk organdy scarf. Degumming is the process of removing sericin (silk gum) from silk. Removing the gum improves the silk's luster, color, feel, and texture. Most commercial silk fabrics are sold completely degummed, but in this work shop you will learn how silk fibers can be degummed and hand-painted on the areas where sericin remains and where it has been removed, giving layers of depth and texture to colors and patterns.
30th Anniversary Exhibition at Wabisabiya
This was the starting point of my textile career: in 2000, I opened a store with experimental space for production and sales
in 1-chome, Kiryu, Gunma. My work was born here until 2012, after which I chose to relocate to the US.
Just around that time, the owner of a store called “Wabisabiya” was renovating their store and invited me to present my seasonal scarves in their space. Thus began my journey with “Wabisaya”and 13 years have passed.
This will be my 30th solo exhibition. to commemorate the many years of business, kindness, and support from our many customers.
Thanks to Wabisaya.

Year of the Snake at Wabisabiya
A new year is coming. The coming year is the year of the snake.
In the year 2025, the year of the Snake, the “乙” represents a state of still developing, while the “Snake” signifies the maximum growth of a plant. This combination suggests a time when your past efforts and preparations will begin to bear fruit. We actually plant a seed without knowing it, and it grows with great care and surprises us. Every day, our efforts are growing somewhere.
Let us sow many seeds in the new year, make every effort, and live each day with a heart full of compassion for others.
Letters - 2022
I have created an art book, “Letters 2022”, which describes our thoughts and feelings for each month of the year 2022.
These 12 months of thoughts will be exhibited as scarves in the gallery.

This location will allow attendees to walk right in from street level and allow artists to sneak in moments of sunshine in between sales. The beautiful lobby and our updated floor plan will help make this a memorable event.
New dates. March 15–17 date range ensures the weekend is free of major citywide conflicts, ensuring ample availability of hotels, restaurants, and—most importantly—the attention of Baltimore! (Our typical February dates include a citywide high school basketball tournament at the Convention Center.)
